🦺 Safety First

Fireworks Safety Hub

Tips for keeping everyone safe — including babies, young children, and pets — during fireworks season.

The Firework Code

Follow the official UK Firework Code every time

🏪
Only buy from registered sellers
Only purchase fireworks marked BS 7114 from authorised sellers. Illegal or unbranded fireworks are far more dangerous.
🍺
Never handle fireworks drunk
Alcohol and fireworks are a dangerous combination. Never light fireworks while under the influence.
📖
Read the instructions
Read all instructions before you start. Use a torch if needed — never a naked flame.
🔒
Keep fireworks in a closed box
Take them out one at a time. Never return to a lit firework — wait 5 minutes then soak in water.
📏
Stand well back
Light at arm's length and retire immediately. Follow the minimum distance stated on each firework.
🚫
Never put in pockets
Never carry fireworks in your pockets or throw them. Keep sparklers in a bucket of cold water after use.
🔥
Light bonfires safely
Keep bonfires away from fireworks, fences and buildings. Never use petrol or paraffin to light them.
👁️
Supervise children
Children under 18 must not handle fireworks. Even sparklers reach 2000°C — always supervise with gloves.

Keeping pets calm

Fireworks are one of the leading causes of pet stress in the UK. Here's how to help.

🏠
Keep pets indoors
Bring all pets inside well before dark. Close windows, curtains and cat flaps to muffle sound and block flashing lights.
🎵
Play calming music
Leave the TV or radio on to mask sudden bangs. Classical music or white noise works well.
🛏️
Create a safe den
Let your pet hide under a bed or in a corner with familiar blankets and toys. Don't force them out.
💊
Speak to your vet
If your pet suffers badly, speak to your vet beforehand. Prescription calming treatments are available.
